Search Administrator Permissions

Can a Search Administrator delegate Search Administrator and Search Editor roles to users?

A quick reaction from Microsoft!

Before today Microsoft stated that a “Search Administrators can delegate the Search Administrators and Search Editor roles to users …”. Luckily, I got a screenshot.

After multiple people raised concerns about this statement; because “Search Administrators” could not delegate permissions, Microsoft decided to change their document.

Documented evidence that a Search Administrator can not assign a Search Administrator or a Search Editor role to any user.

JDoe@spchamp1.onmicrosoft.com > End User

  • Click on “John Doe” > Edit user roles > Customized Admin > “Search Admin” > Save

  • Although the “Search Administrator” attempted to delegate the “Search Administrator” role to an end user, the role did not apply. It is the same behavior for the “Search Editor” role.
